Open-Plan Kitchen Layout

In recent years, the open-plan kitchen has become a popular choice for many homeowners. Unlike traditional kitchens, the open-plan kitchen integrates with the dining or living room, creating a sociable environment for your friends and family. The open space within your home also creates a light and spacious environment, allowing your home to feel larger than it would otherwise.

When planning for an open kitchen, it’s important to create separate sections within the design. But doesn’t this defeat the object of having an open-layout kitchen? The answer is no.

Creating sections within your layout by using a kitchen island or peninsula is important as it will allow you to create separate sections for different purposes. Without these, you may always feel like you are always in the kitchen regardless of cooking, sitting at the dinner table or relaxing watching TV on the sofa. You must be able to differentiate each area of your space for different activities and events.

The flooring is also a very important factor to consider when planning for an open kitchen. Simply put, the flooring is what’s going to tie the living space and the kitchen together, making it feel like one space. The real debate is, what type of flooring should you choose for your new kitchen? Good question.

Typically, having the same type of flooring for both the kitchen and relaxing area is ideal. Having carpet in the lounge, divided by tiles or wood in the kitchen may not look very aesthetically pleasing for you or your guests. Choosing just carpet would be unhygienic as spillages within the kitchen would be much harder to clean up and bacteria would likely build up fast.

On the other hand, tiled flooring is usually cold and hard which isn’t ideal for an area that’s purpose is for relaxation. So what flooring ideas are left? We suggest wood or laminate. This is because it’s warmer than tiling, suits a living area, is easily cleaned from kitchen spillages and it’s durable.

At Kelly Vision, we offer a range of open-space kitchens at our showroom in Peterborough.

Galley Kitchen Layout

The galley kitchen layout is perfect for small, narrower kitchens that would like to utilise the limited space as much as possible. This unique kitchen layout typically consists of units and cabinets on both walls with a corridor down the middle. It’s usually closed off on one end by a wall, and then the other end leads out to another room. This stylish layout is usually used in smaller homes, such as flats and apartments. The galley kitchen offers a cosy atmosphere all whilst being fully practical.

We suggest planning for your galley kitchen carefully, ensuring you don’t overcrowd the narrow space with cupboards and compartments. Minimalism is important here so you should ensure you have the right amount of compartments and not too many so you can avoid a cluttered look and feel. Incorporating your most accessed drawers, like plates and cutlery, in the easiest areas to reach, will allow for better comfort.

To ensure the narrow kitchen space doesn’t feel too dark and gloomy, it’s wise to incorporate some natural lighting sources if possible. Don’t overcrowd or cover any windows with cupboards or shelving. If there are no possible natural light sources available within your kitchen, having a good synthetic lighting source will make the kitchen feel much more welcoming.

L-Shaped Kitchen Design

As expected, the L-shaped kitchen design is where the two walls are used for appliances, the sink, cabinets, drawers, worktops and anything else, creating the ‘L shape’. This is the perfect kitchen layout if you would like that open, spacious feel for your kitchen without using the open-space kitchen design, then this is a great option to consider.

The L-shaped kitchen is great for when you have guests such as family or friends over for an occasion. Due to the positioning of the worktops, you’ll be facing the wall when preparing food or cooking. This is a large reason why we would suggest a kitchen island to go along with your L-shaped kitchen. You can also incorporate an island that has a sink or hobs built in, meaning you’ll be facing away from your visitors much less frequently.

In conclusion, this kitchen layout is perfect for functionality, creating a spacious atmosphere, all whilst being aesthetically pleasing. If you would like to learn more about the L-shaped kitchens we have in stock, visit our showroom in Peterborough or contact us at 01733 20 87 87 today.
